Flights to Hanoi arrive at the Noi Bai International Airport which is about 25 miles north of Hanoi city centre and is the only international airport serving the city and the northern part of Vietnam. However soon Hanoi will be served by a totally new major international airport, Hanoi International Airport, costing over $8 billion which will start construction in 2011.This is a massive infrastructure project involving seven years of building work over three phases and including a hospital, two heli-ports, schools, apartments and hotels as well as building the largest and the most modern airport anywhere in Asia. The Vietnamese certainly don't lack ambition ! Phase one alone is planned to accommodate 480 flights a day and 35 million passengers a year with growth aimed at achieving 850 flights daily and 62 million passengers annually by 2025 and then to 1,096 flights daily and 80 million passengers annually by 2035.
From the current Hanoi Noi Bai airport to the city centre is along two highways, both of which deliver the arriving passenger in the centre city in around 45 minutes, depending upon traffic conditions. The journey itself is a rewarding experience with your bus or taxi sharing the main highways with cars of all shapes, motor scooters by the hundred and a separate - but frequently shared lane for often multi-peopled bicycles.
